Reflexology and Migraine management.

Headaches can be treated with the use of reflexology.

All ages can be affected by headaches. More often than not, young adults and older adults have headaches. These headaches can be caused by a wide variety of things including stress, weather changes, work, staring at a computer screen for too long, poor posture, old injuries, history of concussions, tech neck and so much more.

At Balanced Tree Reflexology we take the time to understand the cause of the headache/migraine and how they are presenting in your daily life which includes time of day, level of pain, auras, intensity, and possible remedies if there are any. Next, we begin to work with the client thru their feet. In the feet there is a map of the entire body on the bottom of the feet, hands, face, ears and scalp. We use the clues the body is providing us such as calluses, tightness, dryness and more to understand the culprit. By addressing these areas, headache and migraine management begins.

The goal at Balanced Tree Reflexology is to work towards decreasing severity and frequency of headaches. This process does take time and often involves homework on the part of the client. We have found that a person that suffers from frequent headaches or migraines often are in a state of body protection. Reflexology offers a great deal of relaxation; however, the body often does not know how to handle relaxation. The client may leave feeling great like they are floating on a cloud only to find that they are in even more pain later that day or the next day. We have come to realize that headache and migraine management is a slow process that requires weekly/bi-monthly 20-30 minutes sessions until the client can demonstrate their headache frequency is improving. Offering a longer session typically is not worth it as the client ends up in a rebound headache and often will dismiss reflexology as a treatment option. By limiting the length of the sessions, the clients have the ability to learn what it feels like to be in a relaxed state, especially if migraines are caused by stress/tension. Once the client has demonstrated an improvement, appointment times can be lengthened as well transitioning to a bi-monthly/monthly sessions. The ultimate goal would be to only need to use reflexology as a “tune-up” during times of increased stress or 3-4x/year.

Some clients will choose to have TMJ rescue service if their headaches are created by clenching of their teeth, grinding or overall stress. This too will help with relaxation and should offer headache management and is offered in 25-minute increments only. Additionally, scalp massage is offered for those whose stress may cause tightness of the scalp. This is a relaxing session that can be used with light or heavy pressure to increase overall movement of the scalp and muscles of the head.

No matter what the cause of your headache or migraine issues are, consider including reflexology as part of your treatment plan. Schedule today at www.tinyurl.com/BTRappt.
